NHEC Conference

I spent most of the week attending the National Hydraulic Engineer’s Conference here in Park City, Utah. Monday was kicked off with a research committee meeting that I participate in as a friend of the committee. It was a good meeting and I came away with a couple of duties that I’ll need to attend to.

I did a talk on some work we did in Texas on Thursday. I spent most of Tuesday getting ready for my talk, then sat sessions on Wednesday and Thursday. I came away with a few ideas and a few new things to think about. Yesterday afternoon was pretty tough to sit through, though. I am easily bored and listening to talks about software is rough on me. Even if I’m interested, my learning mode is to “learn by playing” and that’s not possible when someone is doing a guided tour on a screen.

I made it, but it was tough. Fortunately I had my iPad with me and my journal and I was able to keep track of the talk and write (and read). It might be impolite, but I stay in the back where I can be inconspicuous.

Now it’s time to go home. I think we’ll pack up and leave early. I’m ready to be in my own digs again and need some downtime before I start the next big push. I’m looking forward to the drive. It will be warm today, but the forecast is for a moderate weekend and I might have to get the bike out and take a long ride. That would be good.
