Computer Black Thumb

Posted Sun Feb 27, 2005 in

I have no idea why things work (or fail to work) the way they do sometimes. Earlier this afternoon, I started to respond to a comment. My weblog failed to load. The cursor just cycled without ever accessing the site. Neither could I open a secure shell to my server.

I worked around the house as long as I could. Without getting anywhere, I decided to drive up to campus. So, Wife and I headed out, she driving the Bimmer for the first time. That was a treat and I think she likes the car.

Once in my lab, I could not find anything wrong with my server. But, no matter what I did, I also could not gain access to my weblog. I worked for an hour or so with no joy.

In the meantime, I also found that my Apple Cinema Display (for my office computer) would not work. The power light would light, briefly, then power down. I have no idea what might be going on there. I will call Applecare next week.

Well, because I could not get anything to work, I decided to go drown my sorrows in a Dairy Queen Blizzard. There was nothing left to do. So Wife and I drove toward home and stopped into our local store. There I did my best to forget my troubles.

Once home again, I tried my weblog again. Now it is working just fine. I have no idea what went wrong, but am suspicious of some network problems. There may have either been a glitch or they could have been working on the system.

But I feel like I have a computer black thumb today. Everything I touch seems to go down. I really should not be working with my notebook computer for fear that it, too, will suddenly belly-up.

  1. Doesnt that just piss you off!! I know it does me!!! Kind of like when my blackhawk engine shuts down. There is no mechanical reason that it should shut down but you know your not getting back in that aircraft until SOMETHING is fixed… :D — SiL    27 February 2005, 12:44    #

  2. Well, the impact of my computers not working is not nearly so important as that of one of your Blackhawks! Nonetheless, I sure understand. ruminator    27 February 2005, 14:29    #

  3. Man, I do understand that one!

Hey, I lost you for a while; did your RSS feed change? dan    27 February 2005, 15:12    #

  4. Yes, my feed changed. When I changed from MT to Textpattern, my feeds all changed. You can grab one from the right. ruminator    27 February 2005, 15:25    #

  5. Apple CInema Display? Work Computer? What Size? I’m drooling here. I mean, I love my Samsung Panel but….. Rookie    28 February 2005, 11:13    #

  6. Heh heh heh… Yes, I had some funds last year that bought me a dual 2.0G5 with the 23” Apple Cinema HD display. I love my Macs—they work just the way that I want to work. ruminator    28 February 2005, 11:40    #

  7. I toyed with getting a Mini, But I really needed the new monitor. More useful for me.

If it had something a bit more powerful than a 9200 in it, maybe….. Rookie    28 February 2005, 12:38    #

  8. Yeah, the monitor is a big deal. The mini would be a fun box and is a great starter computer. I’m thinking about getting Wife either an iBook or a Mac mini.

I love the G5’s. They are great machines. I would be tempted to get an iMac G5 if I didn’t have this Powerbook.

  9. Cool, Just got my State Taxes Back. Now to decide on Speakers (I have my eyes on a nice 2.1 set, My Apartment is so small I don’t really have room for a full on 5.1) or a nice set of surround (5.1) Headphones…

    Decisions Decisions…

  10. I am using the Harmon Kardon Soundsticks in my home office. They sound great and can produce a LOT of volume. They have a very precise sound that I like. They probably lack a bit in the midrange, but I find them pretty well balanced to my ears.
